The Blue Whale is the largest animal on the land or the sea ever. Blue whales are mamals and live to be about 85 years old. Each Blue Whale could reach 110 feet and weigh up to 200 tons. Some fun facts about blue whales include the heart of a Blue Whale which is typically the size of a car and the vessels are so large a trout could swim through them. The tongue of one of these massive whales can weigh as much as an elephant. Sadly blue whales are an indangered species because during the early 1900s they were hunted for whale oil and almost put to extinction until 1966 when they were out under protection by the International Whale Commision. There is roughly 10 to 25 thousand left and are slowly gaining back their population.

The Marine Life Protection Act (MPA) was passed in 1999 in order to better help protect the coastal waters of California. Over 90 percent of California’s coastal wetlands are gone, because of toxic chemicals causing numerous species to decrease in population. Fishing has become a problem because over the last two decades “catches” have decreased by 50 percent. The Marine Life Protection act was created to stop some of the harmful things we do to the enviornment. While this is a good step to better protect the enviornement it definately is not going to stop all polution.

An interesting statistic in the herald tribune about global warming said that by the summer of 2020 the Arctic ice caps will have melted into the sea. Global warming is a serious issue but nobody predicted that this would happen so quickly. Some of the major problems caused by the ice caps melting would be the rise of the sea level. Over 25 percent of the world’s population would have to move because their cities will be underwater. Major flooding will have devastating impacts to many coastal cities. Florida would be completely submerged underwater. Another bad thing about this is all the animals that will die because they no longer have homes. The most obvious is the polar bear. Polar bears are already showing signs of extinction and will without a doubt, die without ice in the Artic. Not only will animals die and the sea level rise but all the permafrost will melt and this will release more carbon into the air causing temperatures to rise and overall a hotter planet. There are numerous reasons why global warming will impact our planet and it’s time to start doing something about it.
